This course enables students to develop their skills in producing and presenting art by introducing them to new ideas, materials, and processes for artistic exploration and experimentation. Students will apply the elements and principles of design when exploring the creative process. Students will use the critical analysis process to reflect on and interpret art within a personal, contemporary, and historical context.
A New Direction

As we move forward some adjustments to the original delivery of our course program will be required for us to seek some sort of completion by the end of our academic year. By this point in the semester, we were scheduled to begin our Painting Unit. This will obviously not occur in a traditional way as it would have in the classroom. Be assured that I am conscious of the limited resources that students may have at home, and with this in mind, we will move forward with our painting unit in the following way:
- Should you have access to painting materials and equipment, I encourage you to develop/create a painting with the subject of your choice – ie: landscape, still life, portrait (avoid abstractions and non-objective subjects at this time). Feel free to access internet resources to help you out with painting strategies and techniques. The expectations are open-ended. Let's explore the painting process.
- If painting materials and equipment is NOT within your reach, the ideal plan is that you complete a colored drawing with the subject of your choice – ie: landscape, still life, portrait (avoid abstractions and non-objective subjects at this time). Feel free to access internet resources to help you out with colored drawing strategies and techniques. The expectations are open-ended. Let's explore the colored drawing process.

Our due date for this assignment will be April 29, 2020. To submit this assignment, please take a photo with your digital device and email it to me.
Following our Painting Unit, we were to tackle our Sculpting Unit (grades 11-12) and our Printmaking Unit for grade 10. More information will be forthcoming should we move into phase 3 of the quarantine process after May 4.
Art History. There is an art history assignment that is planned for your course. The assignment handout will be posted to the course website within the next week or so. This is a term assignment and therefore, its due date is for the end of the term – June 15, 2020.
Course Performance Task. This assignment handout was given to you during the first week of the course. The assignment was meant to be developed throughout the semester and submitted by June 15, 2020. Nothing is preventing you at this time from continuing to plan and develop your ideas for this assignment. As for the final production stage of the assignment, we can tackle this once we enter the month of May. Just be prepared to move beyond the planning stage.

This last month has certainly been an interesting one! I hope that all of you, your family and friends are staying safe during this unprecented time in modern history.
As our lives seemed to have suddenly been put on pause, as a society we are attempting to find ways to keep ourselves moving forward. This said, we now make a new journey towards the completion of our current academic year. Keep note that this path has not yet been traveled and that we will certainly find obstacles as we march on. We will all need to remain positive, be more patient and of course, to persevere through the uncertainties that lie before us. Rest assured that you are not alone! We will travel this new path together, find ways to overcome obstacles and in the end, succeed!
As you may have heard through the media on March 31, 2020, the Minister of Education of Ontario announced that teaching and learning will continue through the use of technology between student, parent and teacher. According to the Minister, the high school student is required to complete 3 hours of work per course, per week. To comply with these directives, our course will look somewhat different moving forward.
